How to show up in ChatGPT and AI search as a local contractor
Updated July 2026
Short answer: To get recommended by ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and other AI assistants, a local contractor needs three things working together: a clear, well-structured website an AI can read; consistent business details everywhere online; and real reviews. AI assistants don't invent recommendations — they pull from sources they trust, so the job is to become one of those sources.
Why this matters now
More and more customers skip the list of ten blue links and just ask an assistant: "Who's the best plumber near me?" The assistant gives back a short list of names. If you're not one of them, you never even had a chance to win the job — and most owners have no idea whether they're in that list or not.
What AI assistants actually look for
A site they can read. AI assistants pull short, direct answers out of pages. A page that states plainly what you do, where you work, and answers the questions customers ask — near the top, in clear language — is far easier to quote than a wall of marketing text.
Consistency they can trust. Assistants cross-check your details across the web. When your name, service area, and services match everywhere, they can repeat those facts confidently. When the details conflict, they leave you out rather than risk being wrong.
Proof you're real and good. Reviews and a filled-out Google Business Profile are how an assistant decides you're worth recommending, not just that you exist.
What you can do about it
- Make sure your website answers real customer questions in plain language, high on the page.
- Get your name, service area, and services identical across your site, Google, and every listing.
- Keep earning reviews, and keep your Google profile current.
- Check it yourself: ask ChatGPT or Google's AI "best [your trade] in [your town]" once a month and see if you come up. If you don't, that's the gap to close.
The honest part
No one can guarantee an AI assistant names you — anyone who promises that is selling something. What you can do is make yourself the most obvious, trustworthy, easy-to-read answer in your area, so that when an assistant builds its short list, you're the natural pick. That's the whole game, and most local competitors aren't playing it yet.
